Was elected nine times a Member of Parliament from Saskatchewan, serving for more than 32 years in the House of Commons, starting at age 22 as the youngest MP in Canadian history. As a Parliamentarian, he specialized in economic and constitutional issues and gained extensive experience with both foreign affairs and trade issues. He was appointed a member of the Privy Council in 1993 and is also a recipient of l'Ordre de la Pléiade, an award of the French Republic. He is an expert on Canada - China trade issues and is a director and shareholder of a Solar Energy company involving both Chinese and North American partners.

Lorne was NDP Spokesperson on the Canadian Constitution during the debates on the 1982 Constitution Act that led to patriation, the adoption of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the entrenchment of treaty rights in the Constitution. He was also the Spokesperson on the Canadian Constitution during the period of the Meech Lake Accord (1987-1990), and then the Charlottetown Accord (1992).

From 1993 - 1997, Lorne ran a successful consulting business and was involved in several international projects on the political development of newly democratized countries, his efforts included projects in Russia on behalf of Harvard University, and in South Africa for the United Nations.

In 1997, Lorne returned to Parliament as the MP for Regina Qu’Appelle and was re-elected in 2000. From 2000-2003, he served as Finance Critic and edited a book “Just Making Change” on financial issues.

On the business side, Lorne is a director of the successful Free House group of restaurants in Regina, Saskatoon and Winnipeg, and chain of coffee houses. He was also the Vice-President of Public and Government Relations for A1 Soybean Enterprises Ltd., a company using leading-edge technology to process soybeans into liquor, wine, beer and energy drinks.

Lorne was educated at the University of Saskatchewan (Regina), where he received a Bachelors degree in Political Science, as well as a teaching certificate.
